Next destination: THESSALONIKI, Greece, Stop That Sound!
My suitcase is still open on the bedroom floor since Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, because there just is no point putting it away. Monday morning it’s time for the next destination: Thessaloniki, Greece.
Music has given me good reasons to go to places where I would probably never have gone otherwise. I get to see so much stuff, just because I’ve planned my journeys around some kind of music event. :-)) In this case, it’s the STOP THAT SOUND 2310 festival, featuring JUDAS PRIEST, WHITESNAKE & FIREWIND.
“This is big news: The first-ever music festival in Thessaloniki… hosted in Thessaloniki’s largest stadium, the Kaftanzoglio!
There was the U2 gig at the harbour in 1997 with at 50.000 crowd and that was it. OK, there have been gigs of Deep Purple, The Prodigy, Iron Maiden, Scorpions – but all these were in rather small venues (Theatro Ghis and PAOK Arena). This time it is big – at the Kaftanzoglio, Thessaloniki’s largest stadium with a capacity of about 35.000! And the city feels ready for it!”
The stadium:
Too bad in a way that I’m going on my own, seems like a city that would be fun to explore with a friend at least. But when you are out there travelling on your own, you get to meet people that you probably wouldn’t even have talked to if you had been travelling with someone, and sometimes you make new friendships. It’s all good, I’m used to it.
Two days I’ll be in Thessaloniki just touristing, and I don’t even know exactly where I want to go or what I want to do. I usually improvise because, if you make too many plans you only get disappointed if things don’t turn out the way you planned.
Being in a new city means that everything you see is new and exciting, simply because you haven’t seen it before! Even going to a grocery store in a different country is an experience, because there’s all this stuff that you don’t know what it is. :)The day after the festival in Thessaloniki, I’m going straight to the airport to fly to the next destination – London, UK. Spending one night there before taking the train to the Stevenage and the Sonisphere Festival. Got my accreditation papers last week. Only attending a few hours to see Firewind and Megadeth first and foremost, then taking the last train back to London and then from there somehow back to Heathrow to get on the first early flight home to Copenhagen – Malmo.
It will be exhausting and I just realized that I’ll be walking around with my luggage at the festival because I won’t have a hotel to keep it in that particular day, haha! Holy shit, this is going to be VERY interesting!
So yeah… all of this requires a lot of pre-planning just for the….uh….logistics. At this point, with everything going on down in Greece, I’m happy to just get there and get home without too much trouble. I have a feeling it will be alright. :-)

My YouTube-channel made it to Top 40!
When I checked my YouTube-channel this morning, there was a message saying that my channel was on the Top 40 list of most visited/most watched today. :-)
That was nice. It’s actually been quite crazy with the traffic to my YouTube-channel the past two weeks. It started when I uploaded a clip after the Whitesnake-show at Sweden Rock with special guests Bernie Marsden and Adrian Vandenberg. Not the best video in the world qualitywise, the stage is hopeless – cause with the catwalk-part, you can’t see what’s going on on all sides of the stage. That, and the camera-mic being too sensitive, picking up every sound from the crowd as well. But nevertheless, I must have been the first to upload something from this historic event. Cause over 11,000 people have watched it! In two weeks…. Crazy! It was so amazing, I still get tears in my eyes when I see that, that was extremely touching, seeing these guys together on stage after all these years, and the love they had for eachother and the music – I mean, all of it was just overwhelming. Then I uploaded the Judas Priest press conference and after that Zakk Wylde’s and Joan Jett’s press conferences – all of those also drawing a lot of people to the page. I guess it gives everybody who didn’t have the opportunity to be there, a chance to feel like they are participating in the festival-vibe in a way. And then of course, the interview with Gus G. I have to say, I was really very happy about that. I think the guy kicks ass in every possible way – musically, on a stage, as a person. It also turned out to be one of the most relaxed and fun interviews I’ve done in a while. Very enjoyable – and judging from the amount of visitors in just three days, it is appreciated by his fans too. No wonder.
Hopefully even more will discover it, cause I for one feel so relieved to see that there are people like Gus in the business still, who focus on their music, love what they do, and don’t have any rockstar- issues or the bad attitude that sometimes goes along with it.
There is still tons of material from Sweden Rock that I think people would enjoy, but I haven’t had time to organize it or upload any of it yet. And now, it’s time for Graspop in Belgium. Leaving on Friday. Can’t wait to see Whitesnake again!! Priest, my favorite band of all time, didn’t impress me at Sweden Rock so I can only hope that they give a better show at Graspop. I love that festival by the way. Last year was great, but that’s when I had the best VIP-treatment you could imagine, as a part of Jon Oliva’s Pain’s crew – but a guest.More about last year’s Graspop with live pix of Slash, backstage footage and more:

This year, I “only” have press-credentials, but it’s okay since a friend of mine decided to join me on the trip.
She just wrote this morning, and I can only agree with her words:
“I’m really yearning to go to a concert again, the feeling of being one with the music, feel it with your whole body and get intoxicated by it. It’s pure, true happiness when you feel that you are truly alive, here and now.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Never mind all that other stuff, the hierarchy of rock’n’roll where the bands are heroes and the fans are worshippers – it all comes down to one thing, and that’s the love of music. Nothing else matters.
Sweden Rock 2011 – summary
There is so so so much buzzing in my head right now. After 4 days of non-stop music, I’m beat. Slept till noon or something, yet I’m still tired. But don’t get me wrong. I love it.
When you are willing to sacrifice your sleep, when you forget to eat because seeing a band is more important, and same thing about drinking enough water (because you don’t want to risk having to run to the bathroom when a band is playing) – you KNOW how much you LOVE your music. And I certainly do – I live for it.
This years Sweden Rock Festival has been one of the best in many years. There has been a wonderful vibe. You see all those original, crazy, happy people – dressed in the most outrageous outfits, wigs – you name it, there’s just this celebration of individuality and being whoever you wanna be. You can’t live it out anywhere else than at a festival and it’s a beautiful thing, I truly enjoy just watching people. :)
Same thing with the brother- and sisterhood of rockers. it depends on the band of course. At Judas Priest, there were some people trying to hurt others for their own personal gain (get in front row, or what have you…) but at Whitesnake there was the total opposite. I had this VERY tall guy right behind me who had me know that if anyone tried to push me or hurt me in any way, they would have to deal with him first! :) Thanks man, appreciate people who are looking out for others – because that’s what it’s all about – we’re there to enjoy music!
I met so many people as well – Aftonbladet photographer Rickard, which is always nice, he’s been there every year for the past 12 years he told me.
Hung out one afternoon with Suzan from Playground music. When you go way back, we were all just fans when we first met. I don’t think you end up in the music industry if you’re not a fan of SOMETHING to begin with. If you want to get rich, you have a better shot at that becoming an attorney, so I think that it all comes down to a sincere love for music.
A girl walked up to me when I was sitting front row in the press tent waiting for the Judas Priest press conference. She had a smile from ear to ear and said:
“I remember you sitting front row at the Judas Priest press conference back in 2008 too! You told me you were a big fan”. I looked at her and I apologised because I didn’t know who she was. She goes: “My name is Vera, I work for Classic Rock Magazine in Russia. I remember you because you have such a beautiful face!” The lady made my day. :) There I was, feeling anything but beautiful – tired, sweaty, all the “boo-hoos” in the book, and then someone tells you something like that and suddenly you’re in a fantastic mood again. She helped me film the press conference so I could concentrate on asking the band a few questions.
However – I have to admit – I hate press conferences. You have to stand there and raise your hand like in school, ask a question and then you don’t get a chance to ask more based on the answer the artists give you – and by the time you do, it doesn’t have a natural flow in the conversation anymore so… I’m not a big fan of those.
For me, I had to go to the Judas Priest press conference because they have meant extremely much in my life. The situation with K.K Downing pissed me off SO much and for a while I felt that I couldn’t love a band whose values I couldn’t understand or share. But to get to that point after almost 30 years of loving this band, I had to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth – WHAT the f*** HAPPENED?!
I felt that Rob was sincere in his answer, and it made me feel a bit better about the situation. I also wanted to “get to know” Richie Faulkner, cause he seems an OK guy – all respect to someone who dares to fill Downing’s shoes with all the drama that goes along with it. So I asked him about joining a band that’s about to retire – but Glenn didn’t let him answer…! :)
They all recognized me though, which still feels good. Call me silly, but I’m still a fan at heart. Guess I always will be.
Glenn lifted his sunglasses and waved, Rob smiled when I introduced myself to Richie, with a “Duuh, we KNOW who you are by now, Daniela!”-sort of expression.
David Coverdale recognized me too – always, always. My friend asked me afterwards – “He was blowing kisses in your direction, I saw it, cause ut HAD to be you!” Yes it was. I’ll do a little “Quick review” of the bands I saw in a different blog. Rob Zombie surprised me, he was great. Priest were not so great. Whitesnake RULED the whole festival if you ask me!
Ozzy is Ozzy, you know he is one of a kind. :-)
But…! As promised – the JOAN JETT press conference. I will keep it unlisted on Youtube, so it’s not searchable there. A great question and answer in this video (a Danish journalist) at 8,07 – make sure you listen to Joan’s reply to that – she got the whole press tent go “Yeah!!”
More to come soon!
JUDAS PRIEST press conference @ Sweden Rock day 2
Absolutely no time for “computerizing” now when the tempo is getting higher with more bands playing – I only had time to drive home and catch 3-4 hours of sleep. And now, shower and off again.
So, no report today about yesterday’s Sweden Rock, because there would be way too much to say. I’ll have to write about it when the festival is over, cause today is Whitesnake (among others) and tomorrow the “finale”! Monday is my birthday so my friends are taking me out, but I’ll find time somewhere…! :))
I managed to upload the Judas Priest press-conference at least. Here you go – enjoy. A comment or two about that….later on. :)
SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL – MEMORIES #2
Like I said in the last Sweden Rock Memories-post, there is a LOT more where that came from.
I found a whole bunch of photos and videos that I thought I’d share with you.
This one, for instance, is a classic…! It’s from Sweden Rock Festival 2006.
Venom had just finished their set and they had actually left the stage maybe 10-15 minutes before this was filmed. THIS Venom-fan apparently never even noticed that. He was TOTALLY into his headbanging, whether or not it was accompanied by the soothing sounds of…Venom:
Or this – Skid Row were doing a spontaneous photo-shoot outside the press-tent. They were actually posing for the photographer when I walked by and Scotti just walked out of the group-shot cause he was so happy to see me…! :-)
These guys are really like old friends, we “grew up together”. I met them for the first time in 1989, we were all in our early 20’s and our careers had just begun. I love them, the most wonderful guys one could imagine:
Rachel Bolan on stage before the show:
So what else have we got here…. On stage during Lita Ford’s set. Jon Oliva’s Pain played that year, I think it was 2009, and their dressing rooms were right next to Lita’s.
Since JOP’s bassplayer Kevin is a good friend, he knows that I am a HUGE Lita-fan (well, check out the URL for this blog “lita77777” – guess where the “lita” part comes from ;-)). So, he just grabbed me by the hand and pretty much dragged me up on stage during her show. There I was, as close as I’ll ever be during a Lita Ford-concert. :) Thank you Kevin, one of those things that will definitely stay in my memory for a long time! :) Matt LaPorte (R.I.P…) Oliva’s lead guitarist wating for showtime and Kevin Rothney (bass) walking up on (Festival-)stage:
Kevin behind the stage, about to go up there and rock people’s asses off:

Jon Oliva’s tour manager Anett on the stage during early sound check:

And why not a few clips from some of the press conferences…. there is just so much more, I need to find all that stuff – press conferences with Ronnie Dio, Sebastian Bach, Heart…. Every band that’s ever had a press conference at Sweden Rock Festival… Well, pretty much. It’s all here somewhere.
Judas Priest-short clip from 2008:
Blackie Lawless (W.A.S.P):
And just some random photos of artists, fans, stage area, backstage area and just other…stuff!
Guest pass (for Alice Cooper), typical Sweden Rock fans, Spike (Quireboys), Suzi Quatro, backstage-bar, stage (Heaven and Hell), Meatloaf, Nightwish, Wilson-sisters of Heart, Judas Priest, Dio, Sebastian Bach, Rudy Sarzo…

And a few snapshots from the camping-, food-, and merch areas taken by my friend Beatrice in 2005 (I think, might have been 2004):
