Happy Metal Day!

I so wish I had VH1 today…! http://www.bravewords.com/news/165406

I like the idea of a Metal Day – although to me, every single day, is a celebration of my love for rock music, one way or another. :)

I was just talking to a friend the other day about why heavy metal in particular has the most loyal fans in the world. The music industry is a pretty insecure place to be (many one-hit-wonders, or no-hit-wonders out there. Here today, gone tomorrow) but metal always stands strong.

It’s always been that way. Well, except for the Great Metal Depression in the mid 90’s where many rockers went through an identity crisis. Hair spray and spandex was not in anymore, party metal was uncool, lyrics were about being depressed and killing yourself (Nirvana: “I hate myself and want to die“…. that sort of thing). Yet, even the grunge-crap sold a lot of records.

Bands like AC/DC, Kiss and Motley Crue have been filling arenas for the past 30+ years, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Maybe one day when they get too old and retire. But as we all know – metal keeps you young. A metahead can be butt ugly but still look the same when he’s 60 as he did when he was 20. Angus Young was ugly in the 70’s and he’s still ugly, but at least he doesn’t look like he’s really AGED.

So why does metal have the most loyal fans? Maybe because it’s one of the few things that is consistent. You know what you’re gonna get. It’s always like coming home. There’s actually a feeling of comfort, peace and security knowing that the next Kiss or Aerosmith-album is going to sound pretty much like you expect it to. Not too much over the top experimenting there.

But it’s not just that. It’s not just MUSIC. It’s a whole lifestyle, it’s an attitude. A true rocker will always be a rocker. Once it gets under your skin, in your blood – you’re in it for life. It’s a love that lasts forever.

I’ve spent my whole life celebrating rock’n’roll, loving everything about it, living it to its fullest.
I’ve even already “designed” my tombstone in my head, the love for music will go with me to the grave. It will be a guitar.
Everything has come and gone, people, places, schools, jobs, situations, politicians, trends, fashion…. everything has changed through the years, and I’m Gemini – we get bored pretty easily. The ONLY thing that has never bored me, is music – give me my metal and I’m happy. :-)

I remember the day when I first discovered heavy metal. It was like a religious experience, on the same level as people remember their first love, first kiss, first time they had sex, first whatever. Whatever rocks your boat.

For me, it was Judas PriestUnleashed In The East.

I’ll never forget that day. I bought the LP at Record Heaven after having checked it out for weeks. I was curious because my best friend Camilla had played British Steel one day when I was over at her house. Her mom worked at Åhlens music-department, so she borrowed LP’s all the time and recorded them on cassette. Criminals back in the 80’s, hah! :)

Record Heaven had all Judas Priest LP’s and I chose Unleashed In The East because of the cover. I thought they all looked so cool, so I wanted that.

For a 13-year old innocent teenage girl who had only listened to the Beatles and Elvis up until then, it was very exciting, cause it felt rebellious to get an album like THAT.
Back in those days girls didn’t listen to heavy metal. That was 100% for guys. Not only that, parents were sure NOT to like it. In other words – all the right reasons to get the record!

It was a summer day, really hot, cause I remember coming home after school, going straight to the balcony to vent the living-room (where the stereo was). My dad was a tech-junkie back then, and had the best Tandberg-stereo from back then. The wooden speakers could blow the roof off anything!

Nobody was home, so I took out the brand new, shiny vinyl and turned up the bass-knob to the max. The pickup slowly touched the vinyl and there it was……. the first teasing sounds of  Exciter.

I turned it up LOUD. It was just somehow natural to do that, I did it instinctively. When the distorted guitars filled the room – then slowed down – and then started again, this time followed by a voice that was like nothing I had ever heard before. Fucking hell….Wow. My jaw just dropped.

There are no words that could describe that feeling. The power, the intensity, the agressive, pure energy, it just charged me like a battery. I sat there like I was about to get high.
Holy f**kin’ shit…! What IS this?! Why haven’t I listened to this before??

I fell in love right there and then.

It just shook my foundations completely, my life changed in those few minutes. Nothing was ever the same after that. I dedicated my life to metal by being a part of that world in every aspect. I knew everything about every band by the time I was 15.

My parents were sure it was just a “passing phase” and informed me that it would never put food on the table. Well, when it actually DID, they ran out of arguments. Same thing about that “phase” thing. I never “got out” of the metal-phase and never understood why I should.

Nothing makes me as happy as music and this life that I love so much is all thanks to that. My best friends, my career, my travels – none of that would have happened if I hadn’t bought that Unleashed In The East back in 1982 or whatever it was….

I might have gotten a little bit jaded but in general I’m still as enthusiastic as I ever was. Whitesnake is coming to Sweden and Denmark next week. I’m crazy happy about that already! And I’ve seen them a million times. Some things just never get boring. :-)

So…..HAPPY NATIONAL METAL DAY! Hope you’ll all celebrate the rock’n’roll that brought us all together. :)

My #1 role-model from the early days – the one and only Lita Ford (a VERY early solo-performance). I couldn’t have said it better!

Do fans OWN their idols?

I don’t normally go back to check my uploaded Youtube videos but this one gets so many comments that I had to go and check how many people that had watched it. I hadn’t expected that it would have almost 15,000 viewers..!

Some of it has to do with what I named the video “Rob Halford attacked by fan onstage“.
I guess people were expecting aggession on stage, like some maniac beating up Rob or something. But the way I see it, it’s a different kind of attack when you pass security to run up on stage in the middle of a show to throw yourself at the artist.

This guy “just” hugged Rob and jumped off the stage when security came after him to get him out of there.

Just the fact that he surprised Rob like that is a form of attack, the way I see it. Stalkers do that, and then when they’re caught, their explanation is “...but I JUST wanted to….” like they are ENTITLED TO do whatever they want. Like it’s okay to do anything to show appreciation – at any time, anywhere and in any way.

I would be scared to death if I was a celebrity and fans showed up around every corner chasing me for hugs or autographs. Cause there seems to be a common misconception that a famous person OWES something to every person who chose to buy their records or attend their gigs.

It’s that attitude that makes people go: “He didn’t ATTACK him – he just HUGGED him!”

Sure – but you don’t run onstage during a show to “just hug” someone. If you are that eager to hug your idol, wait for a better opportunity, and maybe even ASK “hey man, I love your music, is it okay to give you a hug?” That would be showing the artist respect as well.

But that’s one thing many fans are lacking. Respect for the artists they say that they love.

The “hug attack” is just one of those things.
Another example is something that happened here in Sweden these past two days. Very non-rock’n’roll singer Rihanna cancelled two major sold-out shows due to exhaustion. The fans didn’t react with any concern for her whatsoever. All they could talk about was how pissed off they were because they had been “looking forward to this the past 9 months”.

If they are such big fans that they have been looking forward to her show for so long – wouldn’t that also mean that they ‘care, even the SLIGHTEST about Rihanna and her health status??

The girl is 23 years old and has a crazy schedule, so crazy that she collapsed. Yet nobody questions that. She is a moneymaker – in this business you’re in one day and out the next. So she needs to work her ass off to make big $$$$ for everyone involved – for as long as she can. Nobody gives a shit about HER. People care about her as long as she can entertain them. When she can’t – they don’t give a rat’s ass. She’ll be out in the cold.

I read an interview with Lady Gaga who said that she sleeps 3 hours a night, there’s just too much work to do. For someone in her position, I can imagine. That’s insane.

Britney Spears totally lost it – she was pressured beyond belief, chased like an animal. And when she went nuts, nobody would come to her defense, it was as if people just loved watching her misery.

The backside of being famous. You are only good as long as you can GIVE people something, as long as they can TAKE something from you.

When Ian Gillan visited Copenhagen many years ago, there were a bunch of fans in the hotel lobby. Some of them had brought their WHOLE RECORD COLLECTION that they wanted him to sign! Imagine everything from his Jesus Christ Superstar-days to Deep Purple, to his solo-stuff, Black Sabbath, whatever… tons of shit! He had no choice. If he had said no, that fan would immediately go and tell everyone that Ian Gillan is a selfish stuck-up rockstar who doesn’t care about his fans.

So Ian sat there, for god knows how long, and signed this guy’s freaking STACK of old LP’s. I stood there wondering what that guy was thinking. Did it ever, even for a few seconds, occur to him that MAYBE (just maybe) it MIGHT be too much for Ian to sign ALL those records? Did he ever stop and think “Maybe I should just bring my 5 favorite albums and ask him to sign them…”???

Probably not.

Same thing back in 1991 when Skid Row played in Gothenburg and were staying at Radisson Park Avenue Hotel. Rob Affuso and Snake Sabo were sitting in the hotel restaurant having dinner. A bunch of guys saw them there and were about to walk over there and ask for autographs.

I stopped them and said that maybe they could wait a little, the guys were in the middle of EATING “give them a break guys – they will have to pass you on their way out anyway, why not just wait a few?”

They stopped, as if they hadn’t even thought about that. Duh?! Rob and Snake could finish their dinner without being interrupted by selfish fans.

It’s cool to love a celebrity and his/her/their music, but what people seem to forget is that a celebrity is also a regular person. Give them space – show them some respect, shouldn’t be too much to ask?

I’m sure the Greek Rob Halford-fan didn’t intend to hurt Rob, but the fact is that he did perform a kind of attack by making the choice he made. To me, that was not okay. But to many of the people who commented on the video, it was no biggie. “He just wanted to….“.

Just like stalkers who are sleeping outside their idols’ house or calling them or their parents around the clock. I’m sure their explanation would start the same way “I JUST wanted to….”.

Wrong. Think again.

Talks with Rob “Metal God” Halford

I wonder how long it would take to actually organize every single interview I’ve ever done since 1988.
Not to mention everything else: Photos, tickets, all kinds of memorabilia…. I’ve tried several times and I’m still nowhere close to getting any kind of overview of all this stuff. My home looks like a messy version of Hard Rock Café, people are joking about how I should start charging visitors and call it a rock-museum. Maybe I will, so I can finance all my trips! :)

Anyhooo…. There have been plenty of interviews with my hero Rob Halford. This one I don’t quite remember to be honest, I think it’s from 3 years ago.

I’ll be posting stuff like this from time to time – and it hasn’t been posted anywhere else ever before, so I hope other fans will enjoy these as much as I do. :-)

(I did about three 1-hour long interviews with Rob, and also with Glenn and K.K for this Judas Priest cover-story for Sweden Rock Magazine. I think this one was one of them, but I can’t swear on it. Its just very likely. :) )

Judas Priest ROCKED Manchester!

At Manchester airport, got here way too early because the cellphone clock somehow changed BACK to Swedish time (WTF???!) so now I’ve got some time to kill.

I will write more about my journey when I get home, with this limited internet time you get at airports, it feels like you have to hurrrryyy to get anything done.

But to just say something about last night’s concert…. GOD how it was worth coming here!! I didn’t have any expecations at all, cause like I said before, Queensryche were terrible at Sweden Rock, Judas Priest sucked big time at Sweden Rock and Graspop in Belgium. They got their energy back in Thessaloniki, Greece, but I didn’t dare to hope that they would KEEP that energy throughout the rest of the tour.

[Queensryche last night at Manchester Apollo]

So I went there yesterday thinking “…what the hell… It’s better than staying at home watching TV…”. But then Queensryche did their thing and although they’ve never really been an entertaining live band, at least they didn’t suck. It sounded good, and Geoff Tate was in a much better vocal shape than he was at Sweden Rock – thank god. Technically, they have always been impressive, so I’m not surprised about that, but all in all, I was pleasently surprised.

Then – PRIEST time…..

All I can say is that they blew me away. Holy shit. I guess that FESTIVALS are not their thing. When it was THEIR stage, THEIR show – they certainly knew how to work it!
I realized that I’d been smiling the whole time, when my facial muscles began to ache! Crazy! :)) But I was enjoying it 100%.

Rob sounded way better than he did at the earlier shows – and not only that, he was in a fantastic mood, was smiling, communicating with the crowd – it was just such a pleasure to see! Same thing goes for the rest of the band.

Glenn was jumping around, smiling, just simply having fun and it was so evident. Scott also. I was zooming in on him to take a photo, and just when I saw him perfectly through my lens, he did this funny gesture to let me know that he had seen me and I started laughing so much that I forgot to take the damn picture! He just looked so funny in that particular moment, then when he saw me laugh, he started laughing too. :)

[Ha! Looks like I did take a pic of Scott after all, without realizing it, must have been his first attempt to get me to realize that he saw my “paparazzi”-ing…!]

I think maybe this was the perfect venue for Priest. It was just the right size and close enough to the crowd to create that exchange of energy that makes a good show. When the band and their crowd actually get to interact, when they SEE eachother – not just from FAR away from a huge festival stage. This was totally different.

For the first time this summer, it actually looked like the band was enjoying playing together and they just loved being at Manchester Apollo. I haven’t felt that at ALL at the other shows.

Well, so much more to be said, but I’ll leave it at that for now and continue when I get home. And I got to meet one of those guys who’s been reading my stuff for YEARS, cool to meet in person as well! :) Well,,, as usual: I’ll be back!

Day of decadence

Made it to Manchester, UK. I honestly didn’t even know if I’d been here before. But everything was effortless for a change – no drama like in Greece or the Sonisphere/Heathrow experience. :

Bought a train ticket at the airport, was going to Oxford Road, and didn’t know what to choose “off peak”? “Regular”? What’s the difference? I took the most expensive one for £5 just to be sure not to have any problems, and £5 pounds wasn’t so bad. Turns out I had bought a First Class ticket, so the lady that checked my ticket said I was welcome to go and sit in the First Class section if I wanted to. Nah. Didn’t feel like moving, I had a good seat right where I was.

And Ronnie – if you’re reading this – the trains are STILL clean and they are running on time, so I guess that your “alternate universe Britain” is still alive and kicking, lol!

Had no idea what to expect of Manchester. I don’t have any references that I can think of, no particular memories, people I know that are from there or anything… So when I finally arrived, right in the heart of the city, it was like a mini-New York! :-)

My first impression was that it had a very young and modern vibe, people everywhere, theaters, casinos, restaurants, just a high tempo. Really nice city, I can’t wait to explore it further today. It was raining when I got here, and I was tired so I had no plans to go anywhere yesterday. It was late in the evening anyway.

My plan was to just treat myself like a queen and create my own little luxury den in my hotel room. :) THIS was plan number one:

Red wine (got two cause it was 2 for the price of 1) a few snacks…. Not exactly WeightWatchers-evening, but sometimes you’ve got to just LIVE…! :-)

Plan number two was this:

And plan number 3 was plain and simple:

The hotel is great. My room is the cleanest, most spotless hotel room I’ve ever seen! It’s as if it was built yesterday! I couldn’t find anything dirty in here if I TRIED – even the bath tub and sink were perfectly clean, brand new. Bed was ridiculously comfortable. :-)

Had tea right before bedtime, there’s a kettle in here – even THAT is brand new! You know what they usually look like after a year or so… Yeah. I would recommend this place to anyone, great location, great value for the money, clean, easy check-in…! And no, nobody paid me to say that, lol! Oh, it’s Premier Inn by the way.

It’s still pissing down. Sigh… Well, I knew it might, after all, this is England. So I’m prepared – brought my raincoat. :) I AM going sightseeing! And later this evening… JUDAS PRIEST! :))
