Jani Lane – why….? R.I.P

I’ve been “on the road” most of the week and not had much of a chance to post anything of any substance – and suddenly there are so many things to write about, not only my own impressions of the week. So, I will leave the Ozzy-shows for now and just focus on the news that have shocked the world of rock the past few days.

Another rocker down, taken by the Demon Alcohol – Jani Lane (Warrant). Died alone in a hotel room, found with a bottle of vodka and undisclosed pills…. The death of a rock star? What really IS a “rock star” I wonder?

Jani hasn’t been a “star” since the heydays of Warrant. For the most part, people have been making fun of him, just like they still do with for instance Poison or other “uncool” bands. It’s not until they’re not around anymore, that suddenly all the mockers and bullies start crying about how terrible it is that a person died way before his time.

Yes it is a tragedy. But how much did people really care while he was still alive?! It’s beginning to bug me, how hypocritical some people can be. They jump on a bandwagon, start sharing memories, when they didn’t really care at all while the person was still alive and breathing.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I haven’t said some pretty bad things about some “stars” over the years. Some of it has been my job – cause believe it or not, ever since I got started as a 18-year old in the world of tabloids and music mags that are trying to sell extra copies on sensationalism, we’ve been encouraged to be mean. It’s “better reading”, we’ve been told.

It’s more entertaining, people want filth. They want what’s shocking. They want the dirt. Being a good person sticking to your morals doesn’t sell newspapers or magazines. So you do what you’re told at the expense of somebody who…”deserves it”, because he or she was stupid enough to become famous.

My point is that we’re all a part of the problem, and maybe it’s time that we all looked in the mirror and started asking ourselves if we really like what’s looking back at us.

Sebastian Bach posted something that the readers of Blabbermouth have commented on as “not being written by Baz” because “he doesn’t have that vocabulary”. What difference does it make – it’s very well written and he’s got a good point. Here’s Sebastian’s post:

People have been asking me about Jani Lane & I really don’t know what to say. Picturing him by himself in a Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills with a bottle of vodka & a bottle of pills is so typical of what a rock musicians life actually is. It is a life marked by extremes. Extreme attention from people you don’t know, while all the work & travel takes you away from those you actually do know.

Playing to thousands of people & then going back to your hotel room & shutting the door. When the door shuts… the quiet is the exact opposite of the volume of the concert. The solitude of the empty hotel room becomes the diametric parallel of the adulation of strangers. For some, the bottle of vodka or whatever becomes a friend that is always there for you while others come & go.

Yes I have felt these emotions myself. If you see me going head over heels over a girl, it’s because all I have ever wanted is to have a girl to love & share my life with, & for the one I love to be with me wherever I’m at, travel with me to distant locales & stay in nice kick ass hotel suites & have fun & sing & dance & see the world. But so far this is a fantasy. Just like Jani, I spend most of my time alone in a hotel room dreaming of a girl I love who is somewhere else. I bet Jani Lane felt exactly what I feel. How could he not?

I remember decades ago being invited to Janis house for a barbeque, which we went to. But Jani didn’t show up. So I spent the afternoon with Janis dad cooking burgers & steaks & having a wonderful day with his family.

My condolences to his family & especially Janis children who now only have memories of their dad to hold on to. That is truly heartbreaking.
Let this be yet another lesson to tell someone some kind words sometimes… before it’s too late… while they are still alive. I can guarantee Jani Lane would not have anticipated everyone coming out of the woodwork extolling the life & times of Jani Lane. Which is why he probably died alone. In a hotel room. With his only real friend…that killed him in the end.

I think it’s very well written… Drugs and alcohol are to blame for so much misery. But let’s not forget that even the “lonely musicians” DO have people around them who care, but who are just not being let in – who are not being allowed to care.

I’ve dealt with addicts as well, and it’s very, very hard, it drains you. They don’t realize what their actions are doing to other people. I could think of a million things but the bottom line is that being the friend of an addict requires a lot of strength. Sometimes you feel like you want to give up, yet you don’t because you CARE… Don’t expect to get a thank you for sticking through the worst of times, because in the mind of an addict, they are alone – even if they do have people who want nothing more than to be there for them through thick and thin. The parents of Amy Winehouse said the same thing – they tried everything, but they couldn’t get through to their daughter.

Jani Lane had children. He was loved.

His death is a tragedy, just like the loss of so many others who have lost their lives to drugs and alcohol. But in all of this, maybe it will also make people stop for a second and think.

My thoughts right now are all over the place. I wasn’t a fan or Warrant and I didn’t know Jani. But I am concerned about what his death symbolises, as it’s not the first and unfortunately, not the last.

How many more will have to lose their lives before the stupid rock’n’roll lifestyle becomes UNCOOL? People still think it’s “cool” to get piss drunk on a regular basis, because it’s “rock’n’roll”. It’s NOT. It’s more rock’n’roll to have the balls and the character to say no
Some get high on various substances that they THINK they are in control of. They’re not. If they were, they wouldn’t need them – at all.

Maybe Jani had “a few drinks” because he needed to “relax”. Little did he know that it would end this way. My thoughts go out to his friends and family… And I hope his death, and the loss of many before him, will not be in vain.

Ozzy and Lalala

In Poland. Staying in the absolutely coolest hotel room I’ve ever seen (maybe Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas was close to being as cool).
It’s an art hotel called Lalala and they very accurately guessed my taste cause I got a room that could have been decorated by me if I had the budget to do something similar at home. :)
Everything in BLACK, spider decorations, red blankets, fake black fur on the walls and one of those waterfall-showers! :))

I slept like a baby, very comfortable bed too. I just wish I hadn’t been sick. I was coming down with something before I left and I tried to stop it with vitamins and camomille tea and all that, but it was too late. So I was sleeping everywhere I could, at the airport lounge (flight was 1 hour delayed because of tehnical problems), on the plane, went to bed early when I got here…. I think I might be fit for the show tonight.

Time for more OZZY at Ergo Arena in Sopot, Poland. It’s only a 3 minute walk down the road, at least according to the map. Let’s hope it’s correct.

After tonight, one more Ozzy-show in Denmark and then that’s that. No more Ozzy until the next time he decides to tour.
Instead, there will be a whole bunch of Firewind-gigs all over the place. But first things first – time for breakfast…

1992 Donington Monsters of Rock and Skid Row press conference

Found an old press conference with SKID ROW from when they played the Donington Monsters of Rock-festival back in 1992.
It’s probably been on my show at Radio MCB since there’s music in there too (don’t remember anymore, feels ages ago).

A very short clip from this press conference is in the “Roadkill“-video, for you old Skids-fans and collectors. :-)) The reporter who sat right next to me was from Spain or something and had a funny accent, so when she asked Sebastian “Have you calmed down?” she said it in such a strange way that he thought she said “Have you got a condom?”. Not that I’m surprised he interpreted it his own Baz-way! :-)

This was such a crazy day. The bands were staying all over the place and there were press conferences here and there around the Donington Park area – not to mention individual interviews, so it was hell getting from one place to another.

I was scheduled to do an interview with Blackie Lawless in… I don’t remember exactly, might have been Milton Keynes. Skid Row were about to kick off this press conference at the same time – in Nottingham. At the time – I was more interested in hanging with the skids than with Blackie, so I rushed off to Nottingham and asked my friend Ozzie to do the interview with Blackie for me. It was damn brave of her to do that, she had never done that before, and on top of all, she was a big W.A.S.P-fan and was dead nervous. Her interview turned out great. :-)

In the meantime, I was in Nottingham, attending this circus. Cause it was usually a circus when Skid Row were involved. :-)
However….it got late, people didn’t want to go even long after the press conference had finished.
It was just like that with Skid Row – there was always something happening, always some kind of party going on. And if there wasn’t, they could turn any boring joint into a Party-Central.

My hotel was in London and well…. I didn’t know back then that trains don’t run late in the evenings in England, so I was stuck. I ended up paying a CAB to take me from Nottingham to London – and then when I got back to Sweden just slid the bill to my editor…. He never said anything, just paid it, no questions asked. Pure luck!

Donington rocked, great memories from there, I remember how everybody was there in the backstage area. K K Downing (Judas Priest) was walking around, the Magnum-guys, the dudes from Venom, the bands, other familiar faces… If I only knew where I have those backstage-photos right now. I’ll post them as soon as I rememember where they are. :-)

But for now – enjoy the press conference from August 1992. Here is what the press/backstage/artist itinerary looked like…..Funny with the actual names of the artists in there, to clarify things for the backstage crew.

Yngwie – Yngwie and… Yngwie!

I’m so, so excited about seeing Yngwie Malmsteen in New York City in October. Got the confirmation today – ticket is OK. I have a feeling that it will be a gig to remember, cause all the presale-tickets have already been sold out. :-)

Then I saw that there will be MORE guitarists the next day, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker and Leslie West, also in NYC. Don’t know if I should extend my stay with one more day to see that too, cause after all, what’s the rush, I have that whole week off anyway….

That would make it a total guitar-orgy: Gus G and Bob Katsionis on Wednesday, Yngwie Malmsteen on Thursday and Uli J Roth and Michael Schenker on Friday…. How much string-bending can you take 3 days in a row? :-))

Those of you who have followed me through the years, already know that Yngwie was my big idol back in the 80’s. Part of the story has already been told here.

To me, Yngwie is synonymous to fantastic, beautiful guitarplaying. It can be so beautiful that you just… float away on little clouds or something, it’s gourmet music – the best of the best. I can’t even put it into words. What he can do, is beyond anything.

[Beautiful stuff….]

I sometimes hear people go “Geez, Yngwie?! What’s like guitar-masturbation, it’s just too much!” Those people haven’t really listened. A friend of mine, who’s far from a music nerd, was reluctantly dragged to an Yngwie-concert by a male musician friend of hers. She was one of those who was rolling her eyes when she agreed to go, and she automatically prepared herself for a boring evening.
She had been to a Steve Vai-gig with me years ago, and that didn’t really leave her particularly impressed. I guess maybe Steve is more….technical brilliance for those who are already musicians.

I told her Yngwie was not only a genious, he is entertaining too. She came back after the show and was pleasently surprised. “I never thought I would say this, but – he was actually good! I enjoyed the show!”

[Yngwie – DEFINITELY not boring! :-) ]

There you go. There’s a reason why EVERYBODY knows who Yngwie is, not only guitar-freaks. He is an entertainer – he plays with ease and makes everything look like a piece of cake, while running back and forth striking poses left and right. :-) Yngwie is rarely boring.

I like his instrumentals the most, and I’m not necessarily a fan of instrumentals – but when he does it, it’s just…like I would imagine music would sound in heaven. I can imagine Yngwie playing up there on a cloud and have harp/guitar-duel with one of the angels!

Soon. Very soon. :-))

Ozzy in Poland, travels and Russian visitors

After a short concert-break, it’s time to start planning for “round two” of my Rock’n’Roll Travels again.
Next up is OZZY in Poland. It was kind of a bummer to miss him at Graspop (he cancelled that show due to illness) but I’m sure the show in Poland will be worth the trip.

This travel-thing is like a drug, I can’t get enough of it, and I wish I could do this full time all year round. In a way, maybe I’m even better off than the bands I’m seeing (depending on the popularity of the band of course).
While they’re travelling around in tour buses with everything that comes with it (I’ve done it, I know the little “details” that are far from nice or comfortable) – I’m flying everywhere and staying in decent hotels.
It’s not that I’m a rich bitch, Far from it. I’ve just done this for so long that I know all the tricks to get the best, cheapest deals for flights and hotels. Might share my tips someday. Or open my own rock’n’roll travel agency.

Like my Firewind-trip to the UK in September (which is the 1st round. After that, shows in NL, BE & DE + 3 shows overseas).
I’ll be going to 3 shows during a weekend+a Monday that I just kind of threw in there because I think that Reading-show could be interesting. ;-)

All the flights, trains, hotels and transfers have cost me $ 282 (=£172 or 198 Euro). That’s for EVERYTHING.
It includes flight Copenhagen-Manchester, hotel in Manchester 2 nights, train Manchester-Glasgow, hotel in Glasgow, flight Glasgow-London, airport-transfer and train London to Reading, train from reading to London and flight home to Copenhagen. Beat that price if you can.

I travel to see bands that I like, but sometimes, depending on the band, it’s more an excuse to travel than the reason. I’ve never been to Poland for instance. I most likely would never have gone there if I hadn’t found an excuse to go. Ozzy is one of the best “excuses” I could think of. :-)

Found a hotel that’s 3 minutes from the arena that I booked months ago. I’m glad I did because NOW, everything in Gdansk and Sopot (where the arena is) is sold out! And the rooms that are still available are crazy expensive. So, it pays of being early.
It’s a cool designer hotel where each room is unique. No two rooms look alike. I hope I get that “John Lennon” Imagine-inspired room (the white one). Would be nice. :)

Anyway, I’m just glad and very much looking forward to the show – which by the way will be repeated two days later when I see Ozzy at Smukfest-festival in Skanderborg, Denmark. It’s actually a very strange place for him to play because it’s not really a rock concert. It’s all kinds of pop- and alternative music, Danish stars that I haven’t heard of, so I’m wondering about what kind of crowd he will have.
I saw some advertising at Copenhagen central station and they listed all kinds of artists, EXCEPT Ozzy. That’s weird. You get a legendary artist to the festival, and then you barely even mention it? If I hadn’t seen it on the Ozzy Android-app, I wouldn’t even have known about it.

Today is cleaning day. Getting a visitor from Russia on Friday. Probably one of the most “exotic” visitors, since I don’t know anyone from there, other than short chats I’ve had on Youtube with a girl who filmed Jon Oliva’s Pain at Bang Your Head last year.

Now I’ll be hosting Vera, a fellow colleague from the Russian edition of Classic Rock Magazine, that I met in the press-tent at Sweden Rock Festival.
She walked up to me when I was sitting there a few hours before the Judas Priest press-conference (before people started dropping in, because after that, you can forget about getting a good seat in there) and said she remembered me from a few years back – ALSO at the Judas Priest press conference. I had told her that I was a huge Priest-fan apparently.

I’m always amazed with people who actually REMEMBER things. I never remember anything. Too much going on in life sometimes, my “blondie-brain” tends to focus on the future and forget a lot of stuff from the past, even if that “past” was only yesterday.

Vera turned out to be super-nice and helpful. She offered to film the Priest press-conference so that I could concentrate on just listening or asking questions myself. She did that on yet another press conference, can’t remember which one (yeah, the thing about the short memory!).
And then on Zakk Wylde’s press conference, I came WAY too late, it had already started. She on the other hand, had been there on time, so when I rushed in, she offered me her spot so I could get a better angle if I wanted to film it. Just a very helpful and unselfish person, from what I could tell, not knowing much about her. :)

I’ve always trusted my gut-feeling when it comes to people. Sometimes I’m wrong, but most of the time I’m right. :) Spoke to to her briefly the other day and she started telling me about all the gigs she was going to during her visit in Sweden. I couldn’t help laughing because she sounded just like me! Then she comments on that going: “If there’s chance to see a gig, I always do!” Hell YES, sister!
That’s what it’s all about.

I don’t know too many people, especially not girls, who are like that. So it’s great to get to know a fellow rock chick that shares the same passion for music and live-music.

Check out her interview with Doro:

Well, time to start vacuuming, doing dishes and all that stuff, and transform this from a “before-and-after travel”-home with passport, adapters, carry-ons and tickets that are laying around the house, to a more guest-friendly area. :-)
