Yngwie – The Master
The last day of my US-trip was reserved for the Yngwie-concert at Irving Plaza. I haven’t felt that excited in a while, I was such a huge fan of Yngwie back in the 80’s. I even remember my very first byline-photo, I was wearing an Yngwie Odyssey t-shirt and his guitarpick as a pendant (melted a hole in it with a hot needle and put a chain through it).

I loved his music. So, I was stoked to see him after such a long time. When I got to the venue about 6.30, a half hour before the doors were supposed to open, there was a looooong line, going all the way around the block! WTF…! I never expected THAT!
I asked the guys in front of me in line if it was always like that at this venue. One of them smiled and said: “There are a LOOOOT of guitarplayers in New York City…!”
Ah. Gotcha. What guitarplayer would miss seeing the one and only Yngwie Malmsteen?!
Very cool club, old-style with crystal chandeliers and red curtains and everything – just like a real theater. By the time I got in, it was full in the front already. Almost. I walked to the right side of the stage, where there was a free space and the security guy said that it was for letting people through, but I could stand there for now.
Ended up talking with the really nice security guy. Said he is a singer, that he’d been touring with his own band back in the day, and that he was featured in a documentary about “Where are they now?” 80’s stars. This is one of the things I like about traveling on my own – I get to meet people who have interesting stories to tell. Can be anything from a security guy to a cab driver or the security lady at the airport, Norma that I made friends with during our long wait yesterday….
NO OPENING ACT – what a relief!! That’s the best news I could get, cause I don’t like opening acts. Back in the day there was a point having an opener. It would normally be a band in the same style as the headliner. NOW they give you anything just to be able to cover expenses as touring costs a lot.
The ANTICIPATION when I knew Yngwie was going to hit the stage any second…! I felt like a KID!! And the man certainly knows how to make an entrance! Here’s his spectacular entrance. :)
I still get a kick from just thinking about that gig..! The first 30 minutes or so I didn’t even think, I just soaked in the atmosphere, the feeling.
Yngwie is the #1 Guitar Hero-Diva. He rules his guitar and he rules the crowd.
His guitar would do anything for him, make any sound he wants…because it’s in the hands of the ONE and only true Master.
I was standing there, feeling privileged to hear him play, cause the music he creates is just so beautiful. It speaks, it’s so full of emotion, but most of all – out of this world fantastic at times. We’re not worthy!
This song is one of the most wonderful ballads ever. Unfortunately, Ripper Owens freaking kills it – and not in a good way…. :-( But still, it’s the handling of the guitar that leaves the most lasting impression….
I recorded Black Star too, definitely one of my favorites, but haven’t uploaded it yet. So I will steal someone else’s Youtube-video from that show. :-)) Too bad they messed up the audio though.
Here we go:
I left the show that night with a big smile, feeling so great inside – I’m glad I stayed for that gig. I could always look for “bad” things, the way a critic would, and establish that Ripper Owens is not good enough for Yngwie – he just lacks the emotion and the refinement that Yngwie’s music needs. It ruined a bit of the experience but other than that – Yngwie is the one and only. No doubt about it. Fantastic show. I can only hope he gets over here too so I get to enjoy it one more time. :-)
The GUITAR-SLAUGHTER! :)
Yngwie – Yngwie and… Yngwie!
I’m so, so excited about seeing Yngwie Malmsteen in New York City in October. Got the confirmation today – ticket is OK. I have a feeling that it will be a gig to remember, cause all the presale-tickets have already been sold out. :-)
Then I saw that there will be MORE guitarists the next day, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker and Leslie West, also in NYC. Don’t know if I should extend my stay with one more day to see that too, cause after all, what’s the rush, I have that whole week off anyway…. That would make it a total guitar-orgy: Gus G and Bob Katsionis on Wednesday, Yngwie Malmsteen on Thursday and Uli J Roth and Michael Schenker on Friday…. How much string-bending can you take 3 days in a row? :-))Those of you who have followed me through the years, already know that Yngwie was my big idol back in the 80’s. Part of the story has already been told here.
To me, Yngwie is synonymous to fantastic, beautiful guitarplaying. It can be so beautiful that you just… float away on little clouds or something, it’s gourmet music – the best of the best. I can’t even put it into words. What he can do, is beyond anything.
[Beautiful stuff….]
I sometimes hear people go “Geez, Yngwie?! What’s like guitar-masturbation, it’s just too much!” Those people haven’t really listened. A friend of mine, who’s far from a music nerd, was reluctantly dragged to an Yngwie-concert by a male musician friend of hers. She was one of those who was rolling her eyes when she agreed to go, and she automatically prepared herself for a boring evening.
She had been to a Steve Vai-gig with me years ago, and that didn’t really leave her particularly impressed. I guess maybe Steve is more….technical brilliance for those who are already musicians.
I told her Yngwie was not only a genious, he is entertaining too. She came back after the show and was pleasently surprised. “I never thought I would say this, but – he was actually good! I enjoyed the show!”
[Yngwie – DEFINITELY not boring! :-) ]
There you go. There’s a reason why EVERYBODY knows who Yngwie is, not only guitar-freaks. He is an entertainer – he plays with ease and makes everything look like a piece of cake, while running back and forth striking poses left and right. :-) Yngwie is rarely boring.
I like his instrumentals the most, and I’m not necessarily a fan of instrumentals – but when he does it, it’s just…like I would imagine music would sound in heaven. I can imagine Yngwie playing up there on a cloud and have harp/guitar-duel with one of the angels!
Soon. Very soon. :-))
Three G’s as in Guitarists
Just hit me that the topics that have been on my mind lately, in one form or another, were somehow related to GUITARISTS…
First of all – Matt La Porte’s Memorial Benefit that took place Saturday, at Ferg’s, St Petersburg, Florida. For those who don’t know Matt, he’s known for having played with Circle II Circle and Jon Oliva’s Pain.
[Matt in an early Circle II Circle-video.
Vocals: Zak Stevens (ex.Savatage). All the guys in this band later became JOP…
Matt LaPorte – guitar, John Zahner – keyboards, Kevin Rothney – bass, Chris Kinder – drums]:
I was thinking about how I even got to know the great people in JOP and their friends/crew… The first two people I ever got in touch with that day, were Greg, “Super G” Marchak, producer and engineer, and Matt. I had just arrived to the hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany to attend a meet-and-greet weekend with Jon Oliva’s Pain, an interview and a listening-party of the new album “Maniacal Renderings“.
It was a small hotel and there was a computer down in the lobby. Greg was sitting there when I walked in. Sadly, he is not with us anymore. He passed on September 8, 2007, suffered an aneurysm and never recovered.
The other guy, who took over down at the computer that day in the lobby, was Matt. He is not with us anymore either. He died in his sleep a few months ago, only 40 years old. I think that what most of us remember, apart from his musicianship, is his sense of humor. A bizarre sense of humor that took me a while to “get”, I eventually did. His passing left so many in shock and grief, but I was so glad to see the musicians getting together to celebrate his life. He lived for music and he must have smiled when he saw what had been put together for him.
Members from JOP, Crimson Glory, TSO and others, got together Saturday evening for this special occasion which I so wish I could have attended. From what I’ve seen so far, it was a beautiful day/evening, with everybody gathered. And I miss them all, haven’t seen the “JOP family” in a long time, I think it must have been a little over a year now. Used to be at least once a year. Then again, things are not the same and never will be. But I have great memories for life.
Here’s one of the most beautiful songs ever, played at Matt’s memorial (Jon Oliva vocals and piano):
The other guitarist who is “Not Dead Yet” (which is the name of the benefit festival where the proceeds are going towards medical supplies as well as a trust fund to provide for his future security) is the amazing Jason Becker.

The more I see and the more I read about Jason, the more stunned and amazed I get. What a fantastic guy, I’m speechless. I really wanted to get involved somehow and so I ended up donating to the making of the documentary “Perpetual Burn: The Story of Jason Becker“.
I can’t wait to see the finished movie and for those of you out there who have at least 5 bucks to spare – make it happen: http://www.jasonbeckermovie.com/help-get-involved
All you need is a PayPal-account. Simple, quick, easy, and for a good cause.
The goal is $50,000 and as of right now, funds raised are up to 49,715
It’s CLOSE – so go and make your contribution!
This is a trailer for the movie that’s in the making:
Moves me to tears every time I see it. At the same time it proves what the love for music can do – it can even to some extent conquer death. There are others out there who are still living proof that the passion for music can overcome any obstacles: Rick Allen (Def Leppard) and Mick Mars (Motley Crue) for instance – then there are the guys from Anvil that aren’t exactly sick, but they have sacrificed everything to the point of stupidity, for their rock’n’roll dream and love for music.
I totally get where they are coming from. Only others who feel the same way for music can understand,
(Funny, just after I had posted this blog – I saw this on Twitter, from Mick Mars. Thought it fit pretty well: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=161178 ]
People like Jason Becker have my deepest respect and admiration. I hope he will still be around by the time the movie is finished. I’m sure he will be.Last, but not least – a more positive note :) In the middle of planning my US trip, where I’ll get to enjoy seeing and hearing the talents of two fantastic guitarists: Gus G (Ozzy, Firewind) and the ULTIMATE guitar hero: Yngwie Malmsteen.
I was going to see Firewind in Florida because they’re playing in St Petersburg (Tampa-area), which is where my JOP-friends are from so it seemed like the best place to go. Then I saw that Yngwie was playing in NYC a few days later – actually the day after Firewind have played there, so there’ll be a double guitar-virtuoso treat, two days in a row, in my favorite city in the world – NYC!
Only two more months and I’m off to the land across the pond! :-))
[My interview with Gus G from Sweden Rock Festival, back in June:]
[The #1 GUITAR HERO in all categories – YNGWIE MALMSTEEN…!]
Just random stuff on a rainy evening
Funny summer – it’s keeps raining and raining. I just picked up my “summer read” – a book which was actually sent to me months ago, but with this crazy tempo travelling back and forth, there was no time to even THINK about reading. It’s Neil Daniel’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ – The Untold Story of JOURNEY”.
This guy has written so many rock biographies, is so dedicated to what he does. I should know because I was in touch with him back and forth, like so many others, when he was working on the Judas Priest biography “Defenders of the Faith“.
It wouldn’t surprise me if I ended up calling it “Don’t stop readin’“. :-)
Perfect for a rainy evening. And what goes better with a rock biography than a nice glass of rock’n’roll WINE?Bought two bottles of Sweden Rock’s special edition red wine. Okay, I admit – I bought it because it’s a cool bottle. But I got a whole box of Lemmy’s Motörhead-wine and THAT tasted great!
Speaking of nothing by the way, I just saw the pick I got from Glenn Tipton at the Manchester show, lol…! I forgot about that, haven’t cared at all about that sort of stuff for years. I used to collect those picks but it was more fun to own all this stuff back in the “good old days” because it was really a sport getting one. NOW you can find anything you want on eBay, and it kind of kills the fun. It’s not a challenge anymore and without the challenge, owning one of those “trophies” doesn’t mean much these days.
But he put this right in my hand, like priests are handing out altar bread at a communion! Guess it’s not far from it – after all, it IS a kind of “Priest”. :-))

More “by the ways”… There will be a GUITAR HERO EXTRAVAGANZAAAA for me in October! Two of the shows I’m seeing over there is Firewind with their guitar-wizard Gus G, and the day after that – also in NYC, THE guitar-god of guitar-gods, the one, only and ULTIMATE super-guitarist YNGWIE MALMSTEEN is playing in NYC. After that, I can go home happy. :-))
I noticed that Yngwie and Firewind are on tour in the States at the same time (October) but never crossing paths until the END of their tours. Hmmm, funny idea suddenly crosses my mind – guitar duel Yngwie and Gus somewhere in L.A maybe? Wouldn’t that be damn cool. Then again, I hope not, for purely selfish reasons because I wouldn’t be able to go. Blah.
Oh, and another thing. An old friend is coming to my home town in October. Sebastian Bach. Yeah, the crazy mothertrucker who everybody has an opinion of (myself included) but I’ll never forget how much fun I had with Skid Row back in the early 90’s! And we’ve known eachother for 22 years now, to be exact. We met last year at “Rock Weekend” in Soderhamn, WAY up north in Sweden. But it wasn’t easy with the logistics or the planning that day, so the texting back and forth with his tour manager ended up costing me quite a bit. But it’s worth it, because Baz is the most unpredictable person I’ve met in my whole life – good or bad, depending on how you choose to look at it. :-) You can never be sure of ANYTHING when it comes to Sebastian, because he is as “in the moment” as you can possibly get. You can try making plans, but be sure that they will change with short notice. Guess that’s the beauty of dealing with Sebastian, he never gets boring. :-) You can call him everything and anything in the book, but never boring. He’ll be a guest at the Swedish Rock Exhibition in October 1 & 2 here in Malmo.
Other guests will be Crazy Lixx and Nasty Idols (also old friends from way back). If you understand Swedish, or want to put Google Translator to the test, go ahead and visit the info page:
http://www.rockmassan.se/ Well, time for some reading before going to bed.
Roxette are playing a free concert in Copenhagen tomorrow but with this crazy rain, I doubt I’ll want to go. Would be been nice to see them though, especially since it’s free. And then – High Voltage festival in London this weekend. I still hope I can go, but it doesn’t look like it right now. Unless some miracle solves the problem for me.
And I belive in miracles. Never stop believin’. :-)
Sexy guitargasms
I was watching a video on Youtube of Marty Friedman in Thessaloniki, Greece – being joined on stage by Greece’s #1 guitar hero Gus G. When those two great players started playing, I spontaneously thought to myself: “Man… What a GUITARGASM…!”
I laughed and wondered where the hell I got THAT word from. It just seemed like the only appropriate word for it. Was it even a real word?? I had to check, so I googled it.Turns out that it was very much a word used to describe the sexual symbolism in guitarplaying. Definition of guitargasm #1:
“The look of sheer ecstacy on one’s face while playing a guitar solo – usually triggered by a long, sustained note or bend. Looks very similar to the person’s “o”- face”
Definition #2:
“The expression of often orgasmical ecstacy shown whilst playing guitar. Most commonly used during shredding”
I often thought of that actually, how sometimes when I see guitarists getting into a solo, or just playing for an enthusiastic crowd, they get that facial expression that most of us women have seen many times.. :-) Well, you know…. That expression. ;-P
There’s a lot to be said about the erotic symbolism of the guitar. Speaking of Gus G, this was something I actually thought of a few months ago while watching the Firewind live DVD.
At times he played so passionately that… not only could you see it in his face that he was totally into what he was doing, but he actually played as if he was making love to his guitar.
“Embrace the gun”??
Yngwie had that quality too. His hands were flying up and down the neck and over the body of his guitar. He could really make it look sexy, eventhough he wasn’t exactly a pretty boy.
My sister once mentioned something about that when we were talking about music. She said that there was actually scientific proof that women could get aroused by watching a man play guitar, simply because of the shape of the instrument and the musicians hands skillfully handling it.It was a subconscious thing apparently.
Quite honestly, I never heard of that before, but it sounded like it made some sense. So I started looking for more info on the subject.
The first thing that came up when I was searching for more info on this delicate but interesting subject, was ART. More specifically, Picasso and a painting called Reclining Nude with a Man Playing the Guitar.
I’m not an art expert by any means, but the common interpretation of the painting was very interesting. I’m taking the liberty of copying it as is:
“Is xxx suggesting that the guitar — the male artist’s instrument in more ways than one — is more important than the nude, who is an incidental accompaniment to the strident music of the colors and bizarre interplay of the shapes?
Is the covert point of Millei’s transformation of Picasso’s painting to suggest the dominance and consequence of the man and the submission and inconsequence of the woman?
But let’s not forget that Picasso’s guitar is shaped like a female body, suggesting that when the man plays it he is copulating with the nude in unconscious fantasy. He is after all playing the guitar to seduce her.
Also, the guitar’s opening has become a surreal hole-nipple, suggesting that it is a dream condensation of the female body, and also an abstract condensation of concave and convex forms.
The guitar’s long, fretted neck is clearly suggestive of the penis, suggesting that the guitar is also a dream condensation of heterosexual intercourse. But playing the guitar may mean that making art is masturbating and is thus fundamentally narcissistic, whatever the accompanying fantasy of a stimulating woman.
As Hanna Segal suggests, to make good art is to make beautiful music with oneself, while to have good sex is to make beautiful music with someone else.
This again affirms the primary importance of the actively playing male artist and the secondary importance of the passively reclining female nude, even if she physically occupies more of Picasso’s painting than he does.”
Who knew that there was so much to be said about the guitar and the symbolism of it?!
I was never that much into guitars when I first got into metal (which to me is the ultimate guitar-music), but after hearing Yngwie, how could I resist?!
I always loved good music, passionate music and most of all, passionate musicians – regardless of the instrument they’ve chosen.

I’m crazy about drums, and a good drummer can make me feel musically high. There is definitely something very sexy about drums too – it’s very primal, very masculine, aggressive and powerful.
Hell, you can make anything to be about sex if you want to. :-)
You live and learn. And all this just because I watched a video with two cool guitarplayers sharing a small club-stage in Greece. :-)
Seriously, how cool is this – I totally dig it:
